The movie features some truly dazzling action sequences and some tense fight scenes. Ninja Scroll ranks as an influential classic alongside other anime like Ghost in the Shell and Akira. It should eventually be watched simply out of appreciation as a landmark anime that helped solidify anime's popularity in the west. If your teen is capable of reading between the lines to grasp the morals presented then they're ready to watch the film. I thought the lead characters relationship with each other was rather endearing and by the end of the movie the female protagonist grows to love and respect the lead male because he viewed her as an equal and a valued ally instead of objectifying her. The male protagonist and the afformentioned female protagonist also share a mainly plutonic relationship in stark contrast to how other male characters in the movie view and treat the female protagonist. I think for a movie from the 90s Ninja Scroll doesn't try to glorify the rape scene and makes a direct point in punishing the monster that assaulted the woman by brutality killing him because of his actions. I would say the most important factor in determining whether your teen should see Ninja Scroll should be based off of their own maturity level. Examples to illustrate this include movies like Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Gremlins which were considered appropriate for young children at the time. I think it should be pointed out that kids and teens from the 80s and 90s were exposed to more mature and graphic content than today's standards.
I set the appropriate age range to 15 with a disclaimer. As others have mentioned the movie does contain graphic violence, gore, nudity, sexual situations including one rape scene, and strong language. The sole survivor, Kagero, is captured by a Devil, Tessai, who molests her. While investigating the deaths, a Mochizuki Koga ninja team is massacred by the Devils.
